Our Approach to Learning

We must address the knowledge and skills gaps in impact investing and sustainable finance to create lasting positive change. Future professionals in these fields must be able to identify impactful investment opportunities, assess risks, and measure the social and environmental impacts of their investments. The Hub collaborates with academic institutions and practitioners to prepare students for successful careers in impact investing and sustainable finance. We also facilitate training programs for start-ups and SMEs to help them improve their ESG and impact measurement and management practices to attract impact investment capital and be future-ready for the net zero transition.

Our Learning Hub contributes to the UVic Aspiration 2030 agenda by mobilizing knowledge and creativity to address societal challenges, especially climate change. Stories

As a UVic alum and founder of a cleantech company, I can't emphasize enough the need for promoting impact investing through education, research, engagement and collaboration between stakeholders to mobilize capital in support of climate focused innovations. I fully support the vision and mission of the Impact Investing Hub to help fill this gap.

Dr. Sahar SamCo-Founder and CSO of Solaires Entreprises Inc., Victoria, BC

As an MBA student in the sustainable innovation program I want to work on things that matter. The VI3Hub MBA project provided us the opportunity to research and work with real world problems identified in the BC Cleantech sector.

UVic has the opportunity to be a true leader in providing a unique platform for students and innovators in the Cleantech space to connect and work together to solve some of our most urgent environmental challenges.

The VI3Hub can bring together the power of many to collaborate and create solutions that support the advancement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Cleantech is an exciting sector for forward thinking students interested in sustainable innovation. The VI3Hub is a place where current students, professors, and Cleantech companies can connect, work together, and make a real difference!

At this critical time for our planet, VI3Hub’s innovative work to mobilize capital in support of transitioning Canada to a low-carbon, resilient economy is more vital than ever. The Hub combines a clear vision with a powerful ability to facilitate connection and collaboration. This was very evident during Rising Economy Week 2021 when our organizations worked together to develop and host BC Ferries’ first Design Lab to come up with ways to support BC Ferries’ goal to fully electrify its terminals and Island Class vessels. VI3Hub’s input and facilitation were critical to the lab’s success

As part of my MBA program at UVic, I had a great learning experience about impact investing and ESG in the Finance course taught by Dr. Basma Majerbi (founder of the Impact Investing Hub). Throughout the semester, my fellow MBA students and I collaborated with various community partners on topics related to impact investing.

One of these community partners was the BC Construction Association, which was the subject of a class project on housing affordability. Utilizing our knowledge on impact investing, combined with concepts from other classes during the term, my team was able to propose a solution to the BCCA's housing affordability problem. After the completion of the project I was able to secure a co-op position with BCCA where I helped an internal team to develop a business plan for the idea proposed in my term project.

Working as a research assistant for the Impact Investing Hub has exposed me to a wide range of topics in climate and sustainable finance. More importantly, it’s been an excellent learning opportunity. The opportunity to undertake important research, develop learning materials for the website, and attend conferences, webinars and lectures has helped me build a strong working knowledge of this topical and consequential field.

Along the way, I’ve also developed some important skills in impact finance that will serve me well in future endeavors.
