Our Research CoLAB

The Impact Investing Hub contributes thought leadership informed by our collaborative and community-engaged research.  Our approach is to conduct research that fosters collaboration and knowledge co-creation among academics, communities and institutions. We believe the most impactful and innovative research arises from engaging stakeholders at every stage of the process, from problem definition to dissemination of findings. By co-creating knowledge, we generate insights and solutions that are relevant, meaningful and actionable to unlocking the full potential of the financial sector to drive meaningful positive change, locally and globally.

Research priorities

Our mission is to align finance and investments with climate and sustainability action and accelerate the transition to a climate-positive and inclusive economy. To deliver on this objective, we pursue a holistic research agenda that addresses both the risks and the opportunities in investment and other types of finance decisions. We believe that understanding the risks faced by investors, businesses and local communities, is a key step toward shifting the allocation of capital to solutions that deliver positive outcomes for people and the planet while building a resilient financial ecosystem. We also recognize the systemic and overlapping nature of many environmental and social issues and strive to leverage multidisciplinary expertise to advance our research projects.

Climate-related risks such as wildfires, flooding, and other extreme weather events are affecting homeowners and the construction industry at large, further exacerbating housing affordability issues in BC. This project, in collaboration with BC Housing, aims to understand and identify potential issues related to how financial actors such as insurance, mortgage lenders and other housing finance stakeholders are managing climate risks and what opportunities exists in the housing finance ecosystem to improve climate resilience and adaptation for BC communities.

ESG and impact integration for SMEs

The objective of this research program is to understand the barriers and opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Canada to integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) and impact principles into their business strategy and reporting. The goal is to help Canadian SMEs and start-ups be future ready and well positioned to attract ESG and impact-driven capital. We are currently collaborating with multiple organizations to conduct surveys and interviews with Canadian SMEs as part of this ongoing research program which is also supported by a training program to help SMEs build capacity in ESG and impact management and reporting.
